Movie Review: Touched by the Tenderness of 'The Descendants'

The Descendants is the first movie this year that I had just to catch on its opening day!  Well, it actually does not open officially till February 15, but the screening I saw was a sneak preview.

We all know now that the movie has gotten several Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.  Among all those nominations, it should get Best Adapted Screenplay.

Interestingly, among the last four Alexander Payne movies I saw - Election, About Schmidt, Sideways and this one - I would rank this as my third most favorite - which is tough as it is since all four movies are excellent movies!

Anyway, there are so many good things going for the movie - brilliant acting, touching script, beautiful Hawaii and some details about its interesting history!  It's incredible that George Clooney agreed to be 'uglified' in this movie - since he has to look older and plainer and really like a Dad!  The supporting cast is fantastic!  I love Shailene Woodley - it's really too bad she missed an Oscar nom.  I also love Judy Greer's performance as well as that of the kid, Amara Miller.  Ditto to the grand-Dad played by Robert Forster and Nick Krause, the boy friend of Shailene's character.  One good thing about an Alexander Payne movie is that it has emotion and empathy and love and the feeling of family is very strong.

The movie has its host of funny and sad moments so aside from the occasional laughter, you may also need a tissue at hand.
