Movie Review: The Thorough "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
Well, I finally saw the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and it's a very thorough version that's why it's also quite long. Although the first one and a half hours looks like the original, David Fincher adds more to it by wrapping up the Wennerstrom plot line and putting several steamy sex scenes between Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. Daniel and Rooney have also been able to create their own take on the characters wonderfully played by Noomi and Michael in the original. I'm not surprised with Rooney's Oscar nomination since she really completely disappears here, considering she was very pretty in The Social Network.
David creates a very cold and forbidding set here though, and this has been helped by Hollywood's bigger budget and ability to amp up everything - the cinematography, the editing, the movie soundtrack, the ability to make a location really apt for the story. However, even with all those tricks and aces on his sleeve, I still like the original more. I guess the shock value that I got from watching it the first time has been blunted a bit since I knew now what was going to happen to Rooney's character. Interestingly, I also found the rape scenes more brutal in the original, I guess, maybe for the same reason.
The original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was the Fabe-lous Best Film of 2011. The American version may not be able to top that but the cinematography, movie soundtrack and film editing, as well as the acting of Rooney, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson should be noticed for the awards end of this year.
