There are now two entertaining sci-fi movies out in Manila, one is Chronicle, which was pretty cool and interesting - and there's The Darkest Hour, which to a non-scientific guy like me was all mumbo-jumbo but with all the running and escaping death scenes, where the main leads fight invisible aliens, who, as explained in the end, are out to get all our earth's mineral resources.
I hate to admit it but I did have fun watching this movie! It was actually a new take on the aliens - this time, since the film's producers didn't have much budget, the aliens are now invisible! Or rather - they have this shield which hides their true ugly form!
But there are some things going for the movie. First, I am a fan of Emile Hirsch (he played that frontier guy who starved to death in a movie directed by Sean Penn). Second, this is the first time I've seen Moscow in a movie, in a long time, since the Cold War! It's beautiful!! Third, I love movies about people vs. aliens - of whatever form - so there.
This is the perfect movie for that weekend popcorn journey! Simple plot, entertaining, lots of action, and no need to analyze things. Enjoy!
