Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
I am actually a fan of Sherlock Holmes, and have read the books by Sir Arthur Conan Boyle way back in college when I stumbled into his short story, The Hound of the Baskervilles. I eventually bought several of his book sets - a group of short stories really, of his work. Unfortunately, Typhoon Ondoy destroyed my copies of the books so I might really have to replace them now.
Twenty years hence, I have now seen two Hollywood versions of Sherlock Holmes, and frankly, I never thought of him as an action hero, as depicted by Robert Downey Jr., who is a very good actor! I pictured a more cerebral, a bit more lethargic character, maybe more of a Jude Law actually. Anyhow, this second Sherlock Holmes installment is just as frenetic and action-packed as the first one. There's a ton of chases and action sequences happening that somehow it kinda felt endless! Moriarty I think was depicted ok, although I felt before that he was not as despicable as I thought he was. Anyway, no point in comparing the books with the movie. Bottomline anyway is that the viewers who watched it seemed to have a good time. I just wish it really came across to them that Sherlock was really a smart and intuitive person. And I remember from the books how addicted he was an opium, but of course, a drug addicted hero would (horror of horrors!!) frighten away the censors and moviegoers. And he was a bit of a snob too, although if the director and producers showed that, there would be no audience anymore. Anyway, let's see how the third installment looks like.
