When I watched Requiem for A Dream years ago, I was blown away by the story and the acting and its narration! Although the characters were drug addicts and a lonely woman and a hooker - you just get drawn into their world - and actually care about what happens to them! That's when I became a Darren Aronofsky fan!
So, like thousands of like-minded folks like me, we waited with bated breath for Black Swan to reach our local shores - and although I still like Requiem more than Black Swan - it has the stamp of Darren Aronofsky all over it!
Natalie Portman here is simply breathtaking! She plays fragility, madness, uptightness, and sexual release so well, you could actually make a timeline as to how her character ultimately becomes the Black Swan! I've actually seen Mila Kunis in other movies before but this was the movie that I actually noticed her! Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder and Vincent Cassel deliver superior performances here as well. The camera shots here are impressive as it draws you into the snooty world of ballet and the intense demands it makes on its disciples - for perfection and grace and expression! This movie will not be everyone's cup of tea but for those who find enjoyment in it, bravo to you!
