It is very important that we make a yearly trek to Hong Kong or Singapore since many good foreign movies never reach the Philippines. Do local film distributors think Filipinos are dumb or don't understand movies that have more emotion or dialogue? I am saying this because we rarely get a Woody Allen movie here, or a Mike Leigh movie!! The movies in my #2 to #4 spots were movies I watched in Hong Kong and were never released here - so sad!
At #4 is a film by Mike Leigh entitled Another Year. It is like most of his movies, quiet and dialogue-driven but has some of the more interesting characters a writer can ever come up with! After I watched this movie, I was actually examining my own life - of how I viewed my personal happiness and if I were actually just a few shades of becoming that Lesley Manville character! (She does a fantastic job here though!)
When you watch the characters of Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen here, you'd be forced to examine your own personal happiness and find ways to mimic theirs. They are one of the most secure of themselves, laid back, intently happy people I've seen onscreen for a long time. It was such a joy to watch them!
